In "Manatee Tribe," renowned marine life artist Wyland pays homage to the endangered West Indian manatee. Known to many as sea cows, these gentle creatures swim slowly, "grazing" on sea grasses, hydrilla and water hyacinth, eating up to one hundred pounds of plants a day. Manatees can live up to thirty years, but their very existence is now threatened. "There may be as few as 1,000 manatees left in all of Florida," Wyland says. "Most are under constant threat by careless boaters, who maim and kill them with their outboard propellers. Sadly, it's possible that we might see the last manatee in our lifetime."
