Who is Bill Mack

Bill Mack is an American sculptor, relief artist, and painter recognized for his mastery of alto relief sculpture and his use of historic materials from the Hollywood Sign. His work bridges classical sculptural traditions with iconic imagery from American popular culture.

Mack is widely known for his alto relief sculptures, a technically demanding form that creates dramatic depth while remaining attached to a background surface. His relief works have been commissioned for major institutions and halls of fame, including the NBA Hall of Fame, the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Figure Skating Hall of Fame, and the Tennis Hall of Fame. These works demonstrate his ability to capture likeness, movement, and presence within a sculptural format that is rarely practiced in contemporary art.

In addition to his relief sculpture, Mack is also known for his paintings created on authentic scrap metal from the Hollywood Sign. The metal originates from the 1978 restoration, when the sign was rebuilt and changed from Hollywoodland to Hollywood. Mack legally acquired pieces of the original discarded material and uses them as the surface for portraits of legendary Hollywood stars whose lives and careers are inseparable from the film industry.

Mack is the only artist ever granted permission to create official artwork associated with the Hollywood Sign. He also restored the original forty five foot letter H from the sign, completing the project in 2012, and received a Certificate of Recognition from the Los Angeles City Council for his efforts to preserve this important cultural artifact.

Bill Mack’s work is held in private and public collections internationally and has been exhibited in galleries and institutions worldwide. Through both relief sculpture and historically grounded painting, his work preserves classical technique while honoring the enduring legacy of Hollywood and American cultural history.
