Who is Herve Lenouvel

Born in 1960 in Brittany, Hervé Lenouvel grew up surrounded by the rural landscapes near the legendary forest of Brocéliande. Immersed in nature from an early age, he felt a profound spiritual bond with his surroundings, which inspired him to draw and eventually to paint. This connection to the natural world became his lifelong muse and the foundation of his artistic vision.

A self-taught painter, Hervé first experimented with watercolor and gouache before embracing the tactile richness of oil paint, which became his true medium of expression. His early work leaned toward figuration, but over time he evolved into a more intuitive and suggestive language that balances figuration and abstraction. Though often categorized as an abstract painter, his work remains deeply anchored in nature.

For Hervé, painting is both a personal journey and a dialogue with the canvas. Equilibrium, harmony of colors, shapes, and light guide his compositions. Color, above all, is central to his process, carrying rhythm, emotion, and resonance. His brushstrokes are instinctive, translating mood and memory into vivid compositions where trees, water, sky, and earth emerge and dissolve, leaving space for the imaginary to unfold.

His work reflects a world of quiet sweetness and contemplative energy. A rich and generous palette, sometimes compared to the Fauvist masters such as Matisse, Vlaminck, and Gauguin, infuses his canvases with vibrancy and movement. Much like the Fauvist spirit, his painting rejects rigid academic canons, favoring instead a pure instinctive approach where emotion and sensation take precedence.

For over twenty-five years Hervé’s work has been celebrated in France and is now exhibited internationally across England, Canada, and the United States, where East West Fine Art represents him exclusively. He continues to live and create in Brittany, offering through his canvases an invitation to contemplation, discovery, and the beauty of nature translated into color and form.
